Message   Long before Vengo, this song already existed not in Spanish, but in GREEK.

The song is originally a Greek Romani song called O balamos, balamos and was originally sung in the Greek Gypsy dialect. The title of the song eventually became known as, To tragoudi ton gyfton, mpalamo. The song of the Gypsies.

Some claim the song was composed in 1992 by Dionysis Tsaknis and performed by many famous Greek singers such George Dalaras , Paschalis Terzis, Eleni Vitali, Manolis Lidakis and the composer himself. Others say the song was originally released by an unknown singer called Yorgos Katsaris.
Quote from Dos Lunares.

On You Tube you can find many Greek versions of this song performed by many different singers.

Kind regards,
Natalia, The Netherlands

Message   Although it sounds like spanish, this song is part of the Spanish Jewish folklore and it is sang in ladino, the language spoke by them before they were expelled from Spain in 1492. Ladino is a dyeing language but lately there has been a revival of interest because, contrary to Spanish, it has not evolved and is spoken the same way it used to be in medieval times.

Message   What she is singing is Naci en el amor NOT naci en Alamo....Gypsys are known to roam.
One can say you can find them or trace their origins to certain parts of Europe
but they don not consider themselves citizens of any country.
So when she cries Naci en el Amor it makes sense since she also sings
No tengo lugar, No tengo paisaje, Yo menos tengo patria
So if you were to ask her where was she born then she would simply
say..........Naci en el Amor
The end scene where you see a car driving nonstop through a country road at
night, while that song plays, also reinforces that statement, always moving.
It just sounds that way (naci en Alamo) because of their own very distinct accent.
Just listen to some of the Gypsy Kings songs and you'll understand.

Naci en Alamo lyrics (Naci en al amor)

No tengo lugar
Y no tengo paisaje
Yo menos tengo patria

Con mis dedos hago el fuego
Con mi corazon te canto
Las cuerdas de mi corazon lloran

Naci en al amor
Naci en al amor
No tengo lugar
Y no tengo paisaje
Yo menos tengo patria

Ay cuando canta(n), con tus dolores nuestras mujeres te hechizan

I came from nowhere
I have no landscapes
I have no homeland

With my fingers, I can start a fire
With my heart, I sing to you
And my heartstrings throb

I was born of love
I was born of love
I have no place
I have no landscapes
I have no homeland

When they sing, with your sorrow (pain), our women enchant you (put a spell on you)

Message   Well, firstly - do not forget it's all about Andalucian gypsies, thus I found pretty amusing the conjectures that it might have something to do with The Alamo in the U.S. (which is now San Antonio... however I don't doubt there will be plenty of other towns called Alamo in the U.S. but this is not the case anyway). There is a town called Alamo in Andalucia (or actually 3 places like that if you include those small villages). So first explanation would be that - just a place one can be born. Makes sense since in the film they visited Seville (all the Alamos in Andalucia are located very close to the Andalucian capital). It makes even more sense if you think about what she's singing: okay, I know where I was born but I don't have my place, my landscape, my fatherland anyway...

Second explanation - the tree stuff. 'El alamo' is Spanish for the poplar. The poplar indeed seems important in the gypsy culture and has something to do with flamenco as well - I read somewhere that when a woman dances flamenco, she's supposed to resemble a trembling poplar leaf. Whatever that would mean precisely :). But I think you get the spirit...

Third - last, but not least. Gorio's suggesting that it has something to do with a play of words and there's LOVE involved. Good one, Gorio. The Andalucian (and especially Andalucian gypsies) have their own very distinc accent (they swallow 's' consonants at the end of the words, for instance) so the woman might be as well singing something like 'Naci del amor'... I think the person responsible for translating the film for Polish subtitles caught that - they in fact translated it into 'I was born from love' or 'I was born for love' (sorry, I can't recall exactly), not 'I was born in Alamo"... regardless the title, mind you.

If you ask me - I would suggest that all the three explanations are correct :). Which makes everything even more fun.

Saludos cordiales,
Tomek de Polonia

Message   I also search the traduction, but I think naci en alamo mean naci en l'amor , it's a game with word and the prononciation with andalou's accent . The andalousian eat a part of the letter in a word.

I have no place
I have no landscape
And even less a homeland

With my fingers I make a fire
And with my heart I sing for you
The strings of my heart cry

I was born in Alamo (bis)
I have no place
I have no landscape
And even less a homeland

I was born in Alamo (bis)
Ay when you sing
And with your sorrows
Our women put a spell on you

I'm also looking for the guitar parts of this beautiful song, if anyone could help me. Thanks a lot.

Message   Hello. First, I'm Spanish and my English is very bad, sorry.

The Azoth3's translation is very good, but it has two errors: «Yo menos tengo patria» is «y aun menos tengo patria» and «nuestras mujeres te chican» is «nuestras mujeres te hechizan».

For that, the correct lyrics are:

No tengo lugar
y no tengo paisaje
y aun menos tengo patria

Con mis dedos hago el fuego
y con mi corazón te canto
las cuerdas de mi corazón lloran

Nací en Alamo
nací en Alamo
no tengo lugar
y no tengo paisaje
y aun menos tengo patria

Nací en Alamo
nací en Alamo
ay cuando canta
y con tus dolores
nuestras mujeres te hechizan

Ay, ay
Ay

Ay, ay
Ay

Nací en Alamo
nací en Alamo
no tengo lugar
y no tengo paisaje
y aún menos tengo patria

Nací en Alamo (x8)

Message   Hi,
I would like to inform you that the original song is in greek by greek composer Tsaknis, and it's one of the most popular greek songs the last 15 years. It is originally called Balamos (song of the gypsies) and you can probably find it in greek if you seek it in kazaa or i-mesh through one of the following searches:

balamos (tsaknis or vitali)
to tragoudi ton gyfton
to tragoudi twn gyftwn

The best version is the one by Vitali (greek female singer of gypsy origins)

here's the rest of the lyrics, i think it is all correct, although i can't assure it's a 100% correct, since i speak spanish but i admit that Gitano Spanish is different and unique, so here is Naci en Alamo:

No tengo lugar
y no tengo paisaje
Yo menos tengo patria

Con mis dedos hago el fuego
y con mi corazon te canto
las cuerdas de mi corazon lloran

Naci en Alamo
Naci en Alamo
No tengo lugar
y no tengo paisaje

Naci en Alamo
Ay cuando canta(s)
y con tus dolores
nuestras mujeres te chican

Ay, ay

Naci en Alamo
naci en Alamo
No tengo lugar

Yo menos tengo patria
